Elite Livestock Auctions managing director Chris Norris says that the internet is now the most powerful marketing tool available to the cattle industry in Australia.
A staggering 54 per cent of the Kindee Pastoral Company weaner lots were sold online to Elite Livestock Auctions' "Stock Live" Bidders during a strong day of selling at the Roma Saleyards last week.
This industry milestone signals the final stage of integration of the digital technology into livestock marketing which enables live bidding, live video and live audio to seamlessly merge buyers from around the country into the traditional saleyards selling format, opening up the cattle marketplace to a wider buying bench. The sale is physically broadcast from the auctioneer’s catwalk allowing buyers to participate in real time.
Beef, lamb and Brexit
Meat & Livestock Australia says the implications of the United Kingdom’s vote last week to leave the European Union are not yet clear, as technical negotiations between the two parties will not begin until the UK triggers Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. The UK then has a two-year deadline to come to an agreement on the future relationship with the EU, but until then, in theory, it will be business as usual.
Australian red meat trade with the EU is currently restricted by low volume import quotas and high above-quota import tariffs, with beef and sheepmeat exports to the EU accounting for just 2pc (23,445 tonnes swt of beef and 16,195 tonnes swt of sheepmeat) of the total volume in 2015. Just over half of that trade (9,460 tonnes swt of beef and 12,921 tonnes swt of sheepmeat) was destined for the UK, making it the single largest country in the EU for Australian product.

Report exposes land law flaws
AgForce has called for proposed changes to vegetation management laws to be dumped in the wake of a report exposing serious flaws with the laws and deep divisions in the Queensland Parliament.
AgForce General President Grant Maudsley said the release of the Agriculture and Environment Committee's report hardened AgForce's resolve to keep campaigning for "fair laws for farmers".
"AgForce maintains that these proposed laws will drive up food prices and stifle regional development, and should be scrapped altogether not just tinkered with around the edges.
A copy of the committee's report is available on the Queensland Parliament website at:http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Documents/TableOffice/TabledPapers/2016/5516T1029.pdf
