THE Meldon Park Simmental Sale went off without a single hitch in Moura on Monday, with 71 bulls selling for a 100 per cent clearance, grossing $486,000 and averaging $6845.
Top-priced bull to leave the ring was KBV Simmentals’ KBV Sylvandale Grampian L177, which sold for $16,500 to Toowoomba’s Janet Newlands, who bought the bull over the phone.
Sylvandale Grampian L177 was as impressive on the books as he was in the ring, boasting 1012kg of red meat, with a scrotal circumference of 43.5cm and an EMA of 138sq cm.
Coming in second-top was Meldon Park K1627, a polled bull weighing 886kg, with a scrotal measurement of 42cm and an EMA of 128q cm.
K1627 sold to Barry and Doreen Cooke, Turana, Meandarra for $14,500.
Close behind was the 958kg Meldon Park Kustom Made, the reserve senior champion from this year’s Ekka, who sold for $14,000 to Carbine Investments, Clermont, who bought a total of three bulls for an average of $11,666.
KBV stud principal Martin Rowlands said while he knew Sylvandale Grampian L177 was a good bull, he was shocked at how much he sold for.
“It was a bit of a surprise, we knew that he was a very good bull, we had used him lightly ourselves and collected some semen from him to use,” Mr Rowlands said.
“He is arguably the best bull that we have bred, and we’re thrilled.”
Based at Murphy’s Creek below the Toowoomba Range, Mr Murphy, alongside Stephen Lean, runs a 50-stud-cow herd, specialising in “superior genetics”.
The volume buyer of the sale were Recruit Investments, Blackall, who bought four bulls for an average of $7750 and a gross of $31,000.
