MAYURA Station hit the headlines in May with a world semen record, selling 10 straws in their most prolific sire for $30,500 – or $3050 a straw.
The semen package from Mayura Itoshigenami Junior sold online to United Kingdom buyer Rob Cumming at the elite full blood Wagyu sale held in conjunction with the breed’s annual conference in NSW.
The 10-year-old sire is a leader for many traits, including marbling and eye muscle area and has had a significant impact on Mayura’s herd.
“It is an incredibly profitable bull producing very large carcases and huge improvement in marbling,” Mr de Bruin said.
“The average carcase of its progeny are worth $2500 more than the average of the herd to us so if we can produce 200 calves that is $500,000. Most importantly, Junior is breeding on, with the carcases from progeny out of his heifers the same very high quality.”
It was the first time the De Bruins have offered any of its genetics to other breeders.
