ROMA producers were kept smiling with the first store sale of 2017 bringing strong prices of more than 400C/kg for some steers.
Rick Whitton, Myrtleville, Injune sold Charolais cross weaner steers for 388c/kg at 335kg to return $1301/hd.
Mr Whitton sent in a total of 240 head including steers and cows and calves from his 15,000 hectare property.
His Charolais cross cows and calves sold to average $2075/hd while his cows sol for 258.7c/kg at 542kg to return $1547/hd.
He said the strong prices went nicely with the 60mm of rain they just received.
“Our season sought of started half way through August last year and we have had good rain the whole time, lucky really,” he said.
“I have got a lot more of these to come. This was just from the bush muster and we sent these in too fill up with the cows and calves.”
He said it was pleasing to see the market remain strong.
“It started roughly where I thought it would because we don’t know which way it’s going to go yet,” he said.
“There is plenty of people who would like it to go down but we want it to stay up, it’s been down too long.”
On hand to witness the strong showcase was Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who was given a guided tour of the selling complex.
After chatting with local producers and agents Premier Palaszczuk visited the canteen where a special “Prem Burger” including 200 grams of steak and XXXX beer onions was available during her visit.
