UPDATE: Dalby State School will remain closed tomorrow after a fire destroyed part of the school early this morning.
Principal Mona Anau said the fire destroyed the school’s administration facilities, music, staffroom and two classrooms, as well as a specialist music room.
“This is devastating for us but our school is one of the hubs of the Dalby community and we are resilient and strong,” she said.
“We are a tight knit community that supports each other and we will get through this. Buildings can always be rebuilt.
“However, naturally we are very disappointed and we will work hard with our community and with the Department to recover and get back to normal as quickly as possible.”
Emergency services were called to Cunningham St about 12.30am to reports of flames coming from the front of a building.
Nobody was injured in the blaze but two school buildings were destroyed.
Police believe the blaze was deliberately lit and investigations are continuing.
Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud has offered his support to the school community and said it was devastating to hear of such an event on Anzac Day.
“Today, ANZAC Day, we come together and commemorate those who served and sacrificed for our nation and it would be a despicable act if someone has intentionally lit this fire,” he said.
“It goes against everything that the ANZAC spirit is about.”
A crime scene has been established.
