A 66-year-old Reedy Creek man has been charged with major firearms offences following the discovery last month of a large number of illegal firearms and ammunition buried on a property near Stanthorpe.
According to Queensland Police, detectives had been conducting follow-up investigations in relation to the murder of Philip Carlyle in April 1997 when they located 11 handguns, two AR15 rifle with full automatic components, three rifle barrels (major components) for long arm firearms, and in excess of 10,000 rounds of ammunition.
The firearms were allegedly located on August 5, 2017 in barrels, buckets and tubing that were buried on a property twenty minutes outside of Stanthorpe.
The charges relate to the possession of illegal firearms and failure to secure ammunition properly.
The man was due to face the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
