A QUALITY draft of red Brahmans not only continued the strong average set by the grey cattle in the first half of the Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale at Gracemere, but they surpassed their results.
A total of 374 of 406 red Brahmans sold for a 92 per cent clearance and an average of $9437 during the second and third day of selling.
While the result was down on last year's impressive average of $12,372 for 332 red bulls it was slightly higher than this year's average of $9084 for the 460 grey bulls.
Both the top and second top price honors in the red draft were shared by four leading sire prospects.
It was lot 841, Brahrock HJ Sir Jax, offered by the Sommerfeld family, Beaver Rock, Maryborough, who reached the top price of $100,000 first when he sold to the partnership of Andrew and Anna McCamley, 2AM Brahmans, Dingo, and Matthew and Janelle McCamley, Lancefield M, Dululu.
The 24-month-old IVF bull, who shared the same sire as last year's $150,000 Jomanda El Toro 802,recorded an eye muscle area of 134sq cm, a 40.5cm scrotal cirucmference and even P8 and rib fat depths of 16 millimetres.
But two hours later Sir Jax was joined at the top price podium by Len and Sandra Gibbs, Muan Pastoral, Biggenden, and their bull lot 925, Muan Rafter, who sold for $100,000 to Bizzy Brahmans, Nettle Creek, Copmanhurst, NSW.
The fast-paced bidding continued when lot 926, Muan Rocket, sold for the second top price of $70,000 to Mogul Brahmans, Casino, NSW.
That price was also reached early at the start of the red draft on Tuesday when lot 566, Fern Hills Theo, offered by Fern Hills Grazing Trust, Bajool, sold for $70,000 to the Radel family, Kandoona Brahmans, Injune.
When it came to the top red averages, the Gibbs family yet again took top honors.
Their first draft of eight bulls under the Muan stud averaged $33,437 while their draft of eight bulls under Muan A stud averaged $23,000.
The Sorley family, Mt Callan, Dalby, had the third best average with their 17 bulls averaging $18,617.
They were followed by the Krause family, Malabar, North Ipswich, who sold four bulls to average $17,000.
Keith and Annabelle Wilson, Samari Plains, Roma, came in fifth with six of their seven bulls selling for an average of $12,916 while the Johnson family, Jomanda, Grafton, sold three bulls to average $11,833.
They were followed by the Nobbs family, Yoman Cattle Co, Moura, whose 10 bulls averaged $11,650 and Beth Streeter, Palmvale, Marlborough, with 15 bulls averaging $11,500.
Letitia Nicolle, Nioka Brahmans, Warialda also averaged $11,500 for her six bulls.
The top ten was rounded out by the Hills family, NK Brahmans, Moura, with nine bulls averaging $11,222.
While overall the sale result was strong, individually only 24 of the 95 red Brahman vendors sold bulls to meet the sale average.
Please note: Only those vendors that sold at least three bulls were eligible for our top ten average list.
