MAHINDRA have updated the look and more importantly the power in their new Pik Up, launched this month.
New styling, six speed transmission and increased turbo are just some of the upgrades aimed at helping the budget workhorse build sales in Australia.
The diesel four wheel drive (4WD), manufactured in India, has been available in Australia for over a decade.
However, mixed reviews, particularly regarding safety, styling, comfort and power have dogged the brand.
Mahindra, head of international operation, Joydeep Moitra, said the company was committed to the Australian market and had now carried out extensive testing in local conditions.
“A six month test schedule was carried out in Australia and concluded in August 2017, clocking up over 80,000 local kilometres,” he said.
“This input has helped create a Mahindra Pik Up perfect for local conditions.
“This is a testimony of our commitment to developing products for the Australian market.”
Mahindra said the drivetrain has undergone significant enhancement, the 2.2 litre 4 cylinder common rail diesel engine now capable of 130 kilowatts of power with 330 newton metres of torque between 1600 and 2800 revolutions per minute.

This is a far cry from the 79kW and 247Nm of the 2012 model, but sill significantly below the 450Nm of torque we have come to see from the 2.4L brand leaders.
Mahindra said the Eaton differential lock will ensure the Pik Up can get through mud, while the electronic stability control includes hill hold for off-roaders.
The braked towing capacity is listed at 2.5 tonnes.
Safety is often compromised in budget utilities compared to the luxury models. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) website lists three stars for post 2012 Mahindara models, though the inclusion of ISOFIX child restraints with top tether, head rests and three-point lap sash seat belts are significant changes to the model.
Mahindra said external changes included a resign of the grille, headlights, bonnet and foglamps. While the interior includes new upholstery and a touch screen on the S10 console.
A suspension upgrade and lift kit will be available in 2018, while steel bull bars and trays are available now.
