Close to 2000 top quality young cattle will be penned for the ninth annual Burnett Livestock & Realty 2018 All Breeds Weaner Sale, taking place at the Biggenden Saleyards on Thursday, May 3.
Sale coordinator Lance Whitaker said he’s expecting to see a top-notch, diverse yarding offered by the sale vendors, who combined, represent a large catchment area including Miriam Vale in the north, Widgee in the south, Monto, Chinchilla, Mundubbera, down to Murgon in the west, and all across to the coast in the east.
“This year will see the best line-up of weaners so far offered at the sale – we have mostly had a great summer season so calves have had a brilliant start and should have excellent weight for age,” Lance said.
“The male portion is traditionally sought after to background for trade, feeder or bullock markets, while the heifer portion is destined for the trade market or as future breeders,” he said.
“These weaners will just continue to go forward and grow when they get home.”
Breeds for the sale have been divided into classes including Brahman or Brahman-infused; Santa Gertrudis or Santa Gertrudis-infused; Simmental or Simmental-infused; Charolais or Charolais-infused; Angus or Angus-infused; and Droughtmaster or Droughtmaster-infused.
“These classes pretty much cover most of the weaners produced in the region.”
The sale will begin at 9am, and will be preceded by the announcement of winners for each breed class and the champion pen at 8.15am, with judging to take place that morning.
“The only prerequisite that vendors need to be mindful of is that it’s a requirement that there be a minimum of ten head to a pen for it to be eligible for judging.
“The judge will select the best pen of each breed class, and from these six winners, a champion pen will be chosen.”
Lance said prizes will be awarded for the winners of each breed class, with each winner to receive a prize package which includes an Engel fridge freezer (sponsored by Suncorp bank), Dectomax Injectable (sponsored by Zoetis), and Acatak DuoStar (sponsored by Elanco) products.
“The Champion Pen will take home a Morrissey & Co calf cradle.”
The cattle will be penned and available for inspection on Wednesday, May 2, while prospective buyers arriving on the Thursday can inspect the draft up until the sale commences.
