THE extended Burnett family descended on the Clermont district property Bendemeer to celebrate the 100-year milestone of the family’s ownership.
The history of the property dates back to 1913 when James and Annie Ahern, the present matriarch Laura Burnett’s uncle and aunt, first took up the country as a grazing selection.
In June 1943, 70 years ago, the late Stephen Burnett bought Bendemeer, and today that makes five generations of Laura’s family to make the property their home over the past 100 years.
Present custodians John and Jan Burnett, along with the Burnett families, welcomed past and present staff, and other community members who enjoyed links to Bendemeer to participate in the weekend celebrations.
Included in the activities was the Burnett Group’s inter-property challenge, which is an annual event between the five properties that make up the group’s operation.
This year the team from Monteagle headed up by Steve and Lizzie Burnett claimed the trophy, ‘The Soul of Bendemeer’.
Queensland Country Life’s Helen Walker caught up with some of the attendees.
