RACING Queensland Limited (RQL) has commenced the installation of plastic running rails across Queensland TAB thoroughbred venues after an 18 month trial was undertaken at Sunshine Coast Turf Club using Global Barrier Systems-Mawsafe rail and Brisbane Racing Club (BRC), Doomben Racecourse assessing the Fornell Australia system.
Following the trial period, RQL made the decision to install Global Barrier Systems-Mawsafe running rail at all TAB tracks except BRC Eagle Farm.
As BRC were impressed with the Fornell Australia system at Doomben Racecourse, it was logical for the same plastic rail to be installed at Eagle Farm, therefore enabling exchange between the two Brisbane tracks.
Track staff at Rockhampton and Mackay racecourses that have already received the new plastic running rail are overwhelmed with the ease and speed when moving the new running rail system.
Townsville Turf Club rail is currently being installed, while BRC Eagle Farm is due to have their new running rails installed in October, 2012.
Australian Jockeys Association workplace, health and safety officer Kevin Ring has welcomed the installation of plastic running rails into Queensland TAB venues.
It is envisaged existing steel running rails at TAB venues will be reused at selected country venues at the discretion of RQL.
QRL general manager of operations, Warren Williams noted the new plastic rail has a number of improvements in the design when compared to the existing steel rails.
“The increased rail height, less weight, break away leg system and the overall safety attributes will vastly improve the welfare of jockeys and horses under race conditions,” he said.
“The total cost of the plastic running rail installation will be $1 million.”
