FARMERS in the Hillston district are preparing for the worst as the Lachlan River floodwater makes its way downstream, which comes on the back of the 300 millimetres the area received last week.
Hillston livestock agent Matt Taylor from Rawlinson and Brown, said farmers were in the process of walking stock to higher ground.
"It is proving challenging to shift sheep because we start lambing here in two weeks and the Merino ewes with a fleece are heavy on the ground. They are being walked through mud and at least a foot of water," Mr Taylor said.
He said people west and north-west of Hillston would be most affected if the Lachlan River floods.
He said the river was already only about 60cm below the levy which is from local rain water alone.
"Any sort of water that comes down the Lachlan now will move very quickly and spread very fast over the low lying country," he said.
