Round 2 of the Wagners Risdon Cup saw Highfields play host to the Condamine Cods at the Highfields Sports Complex.
Highfields coming off a tough loss last week were just looking to improve against the Cods and that’s what they did. Highfields front row had to step up against an experienced forward pack.
The Redbacks dominated at scrum and were putting Condamine under amounts of pressure, this led to Condamine playing the game out wide with a silky backline. That’s where the points were coming from - Cods flyhalf Angus Smith and outside centre Charles Friend were hard to stop with attacking raids throughout the 80 minutes.
It was an improvement for Highfields but a classy performance from Condamine saw them get up 43-12 over the home side.
It was the first game for Gatton Black Pigs after having the bye in round 1 and the youthful side put a solid performance but admitted there are areas they need to fix up.
The Toowoomba Bears dominated in defence early on and knew how to convert good defence into good attack, marching their way up field to score the first points of the game. A strong kicking game allowed the Bears to play in the opposition's half, making in difficult for Gatton to have any quality ball in an attacking area of the field.
Strong performances from Bears brothers Tom and Rob Taylor inspired fellow team mates with Toowoomba winning 34-21 over Gatton at Heritage Oval.
A big match up at Gold Park for a city vs country rivalry saw the reigning premiers Dalby put in a dominant performance over a strong Rangers outfit. After both sides put 60 plus points on their opposition in round 1 the crowd at Gold Park was set for a game of running rugby and that's what they got.
Wheatmen’s fullback Ben Cullen scored a double, while Rangers captain Fraser Donaldson backed up after strong performance last week to do the same for his team in round 2. Unfortunately the skipper couldn’t get his side to cause an upset going down to Dalby at home 34-19.
In the first game for Roma after struggling for numbers in round 1 the club has turned around this week to put a solid performance in against a quality USQ outfit. Unfortunately for Roma the away side was just too good on the day but will take a lot of positives out of the game for future fixtures. An electrifying performance from USQ winger Inoke Tagituimua saw him cross the line twice to get his side their first win of the season 41-14 away at Roma.
