Barossa Valley SA, grape grower and founder of Platfarm, Oli Madgett said when he took on the vineyard three years ago he realised access to spacial imagery and data would allow him to see the variability across his farm.
Speaking at the GFIA In Focus Australia technology event, Mr Madgett said the problem he identified was a lack of simple low cost tools available to action the spatial data on the farm.
“At Platfarm we believe low cost, everyday smart phones and tablets hold the key to the digital revolution in farming,” he said.
“We’ve been working to use the devices farmers already own and know how to use, to help them to carry out work on their land with greater precision.”
Mr Madgett said while the GPS in smartphones and tablets lacked enough accuracy, his company was working with SpecTerra to satellite map all grape growing regions to increase accuracy to within 10 centimetres.
