It's the third annual National AgDay, and what a great reason to get behind the thousands of Aussie farmers who produce our food and fibre and celebrate them.

The theme of this year's #AgDayAU is We are Australian Farmers, so today across all of CommBank, we're celebrating not just our farmers, but our processors, farm vets, stock agents, agronomists and everyone else who plays a critical role in ensuring the success of our agricultural industry.

It's been a year of ups and downs, but the sector continues to show its resilience and remain optimistic about the future. It's hard not to feel passionate about regional and agribusiness in this country.

The customers I meet with are making and shaping opportunities - from developing entirely new products to implementing and trialling new technology to secure the sustainable growth of the sector.

This year, we've been working hard on changing the way we do things to give you the bank you deserve - a bank that puts you firmly at the centre of everything we do, and that means actions that will make CommBank better for you in regional Australia, including:

  1. Maintaining the largest banking presence in Australia, including services at over 1,800 Australia Post outlets.
  2. Our new Drought Support Hub provides support measures for regional customers, businesses and communities affected by drought.
  3. Helping farmers keep their family properties by working with them in times of need.

Farmers and regional communities across Australia have been hit hard by the worst drought in decades. We have just announced our 2019 Christmas Drought Appeal, where we will be making a new $1 million donation to drought relief, to continue to support our farmers during this tough time.

We will also relaunch CANGive, a fundraising tool on the CommBank app which enabled customers to give $5.86m last year. Customers will be able to donate through the app or in-branch from Monday, 25th November.

Every dollar of the CommBank 2019 Christmas Drought Appeal will directly support Rural Aid and the Australian Red Cross and the vital work they do to support people impacted by the drought

We've also been working on a better understanding of the risks and opportunities that come with a changing climate.

We've also partnered with industry experts to undertake an extensive scenario analysis on the potential impact's climate change may have on Australian agribusiness over the longer term and have engaged with our industry partners and customers to understand how we can work together to help build resilience in the sector. By bringing to the table new ideas and exposing other challenges, we're certain we can build a more sustainable future in agriculture, together.

I'm proud of the success stories that have come from CommBank Design Jams - where we team up with regional and agribusinesses and provide them with the Bank's innovation expertise to tackle their business challenges and unlock opportunities, using a different way of thinking.

Success stories include the launch of a new mushroom sauce added to the product range by SA Mushrooms, a children's mobile mental health service from Social Futures in Lismore, and a brand redesign from The MaraWay in Cairns, to name just a few. Read more about these case studies and find out more here on our website.

The program demonstrates just how ripe for innovation regional Australia is, and that there are ideas aplenty that will help the industry continue to grow and work together to build a sustainable sector well into the future.

So today on National AgDay, let's all celebrate our Aussie farmers and the wider industry, big and small, old and young. On behalf of CommBank, we want you to know that we're here to support you, and we say thank you for all that you do for us.
