Agritourism options key to Tommerup's dairy farm future

Tommerups Dairy Farm at Kerry has been a family business since 1874 and under the leadership of Kay and Dave Tommerup has diversified to drought-proof the business. A micro-creamery, milk fed pork and rose veal are all ways that the Tommerups have value added to their business.

Now the family has received a $5000 Small Business Artisan Producer Grant from the Queensland government to help hone their vision even further.

Kay Tommerup said the funds would be used to engage consultant Regionality to assess the different parts of the business and how to best balance them going forward.

"We never ever stop, so this will help us drill down and make it a bit more streamlined," she said.

"All three [elements of the business] have to be part of it because they work together... we use waste milk from our creamery to feed the pigs and we use lower quality milk that we wouldn't get paid as much for to feed the calves for our rose veal."

Ms Tommerup said the mico-creamery, launched earlier this year, has been doing well and now they were looking to buy equipment to expand their reach further.

"We've had amazing success just selling in our local area but we've got more interest outside of the area," she said.
