Charbray producers will put their stock to the test for the third year with the breed's feedlot trial due to be held in Queensland once again.
The Charbray Society of Australia has held the feedlot trial for the last two years, with entries achieving a 99 per cent Meat Standards Australia.
The main aim of the trial is to gather important performance and carcase data including the breed's ability to grade MSA with relevant data about the carcases to be supplied back to producers by Nolan Meats, Gympie after processing.
Feedlot trial co-ordinator and winner of last year's champion carcase award John Mercer said this year they were hoping to get about 150 entries.
"We'll be finishing a little bit earlier this year to avoid clashing with the Gympie Carcase Classic," he said.
"We will have a field day once again before the cattle are processed.
"Feedback is so important... everyone should get involved in these competitions as much as they can... it's a learning experience more than anything."
Entries for the trial will be open through to late March with cattle entering Waterfall Feedlot at Tansey in April.
The planned induction day is on April 9, the day after the Monto Annual Charbray Infused Prime and Store Cattle Sale, a move designed to allow northern cattle to be gathered at Monto for a cheaper delivery rate to Waterfall Feedlot.
The trial will take milk tooth steers or heifers, weighing 330 - 400kg on induction at the feedlot.
The animals will be purchased by Nolans Meats upon delivery with no ongoing costs to breeders during this trial.
The cattle will be fed for 95 days before processing.
Sponsors will be supplying prize money or product for prizes for best weight gain in feedlot, champion carcase, most profitable animal and highest MSA score.
Glen Zeimer, also a feedlot trial co-ordinator, said once again meat from the trial would supplied into Yeppoon Central Meats and to the Keppel Bay Sailing Club.
"It's been really good with them supporting us to make that possible," he said.
"It gives customers in Yeppoon a chance to try the beef and it's a great opportunity for the breed."
