FINGERS CROSSED: Farmers are hoping for good autumn rain in the lead-up to this year's winter crop planting period.

FORECASTING skill is at close to its lowest for the autumn period, but farmers will be hopeful the decaying La Nina provides some parting gifts over the next three months.

Gregor Heard is ACM's national grains industry reporter, based in Horsham, Victoria. He has a wealth of knowledge surrounding the cropping sector through his 15 years in the role.
