The bank of the Thomson River was the perfect venue for the official dinner for the 21st biennial Australian Rangelands Society conference when it took place in Longreach this week.
Although 300 attended, two-thirds of those were online but the lucky 100 there in person were able to dine on the rangelands' finest lamb and fish as the sun set on the long reach of one of outback Queensland's famous rivers.
Among the highlights were a visit by Beef 21 star, Ollie the steer, who calls Longreach home, and a toot and a wave from a passing paddleboat.
Another highlight was the presentation by Desert Channels Queensland board chairman Andrew Drysdale to Wayne Vogler, Tropical Weeds Research Centre, Charters Towers, for his years of cooperation to tackle the prickly acacia problem in north west Queensland.
Mr Drysdale outlined the assistance he had given in helping develop eradication techniques and in proving concepts.
Desert Channels Queensland co-hosted the conference with typical outback Queensland hospitality, finishing up with a night at Longreach's Eat Street in Edkins Park.
