NORTHERN Territory Minister for Primary Industry and Fisheries, Willem Westra van Holthe, has officially opened stage two of the Humpty Doo Barramundi Farm.
The Humpty Doo Barramundi Farm celebrates 20 years in business and has now completed the second stage of its major development program.
Stage two entails 10 new aquaculture production ponds, meaning the farm can produce up to 1500 tonnes of barramundi a year.
This will make the farm the second largest producer in Australia.
Mr Westra van Holthe said it was an amazing accomplishment for a locally owned small business.
“I am incredibly honoured to open these ponds which others have worked so hard to create,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.
“This is a true blue Territory business that has backed itself and built something incredible.
“At a time when we as a nation are looking at ways to develop Northern Australia it is great to see businesses like this already flourishing.”
The farm is owned by five Northern Territory families and employs 22 locals and will increase this number over time.
