FLEURIEU dairy community Port Elliott has been named SA’s Legendairy capital.
Dairy Australia has been searching for the Legendairy capital in each state.
As the winning town, Port Elliott will receive a $2500 community grant to help build a permanent dairy exhibit at the local museum, with a milking display, milk and cheese rooms, laboratory and audio visual presentation showing the dairy heritage of the region.
They will also go into the running for the national title, announced mid-September, which comes with a further $7500 for the community initiative.
Dairy Australia program manager Suzi O’Dell said the panel were impressed by the outstanding nominations from SA.
“We knew the region was home to plenty of proud, innovative dairy communities but we’ve been really impressed by the stories of personal contributions dairy farmers have made to the social fabric of the region’s towns,” she said.
“The quality of nominations received from SA is testament to the Legendairy spirit of its communities.
“From Meningie to Mount Compass, selecting the Capital for this region was certainly a challenge.”
Other winners across Australia include Stanhope in the Murray Dairy region, Peterborough, Western Vic, Meeniyan, Gippsland, Comboyne, NSW, Monto, Subtropical, Smithton, Tas and Northcliffe, WA.
The competition will be held again in 2017.
