KEEPING dogs safe and secure on the back of the ute is important.
According to the RSPCA Australia website, the legislation in most states and territories specifically prohibits the transport of dogs unrestrained on the back of utes.
While not specifically prohibited in WA and Queensland, it is still an offence to transport an animal in a way likely to cause the animal harm.
Silvan Australia, Selecta spokesperson, Michael Frost, said recognising the need to keep dogs safe in the event of an accident, while ensuring they are also secure from theft when parked, led the company to develop the heavy duty Selecta Carryall cage.
“When I drive around rural areas I see a lot of farm utes without an appropriate containment of working dogs in particular, or even a lot of rough home-made cages,” he said.
Mr Frost said the cage was purpose designed with mounting points to secure the tubular steel lockable cage to a vehicle tray.
The cage features a checker plate steel roof and walls and comes as two compartments, including a removable centre partition to accommodate a larger animal.
Mr Frost said the cage was a quality construction with an overall weight of 38 kilograms.
“Selecta has released a well built, safe Carryall Cage that will provide safety for both small animals and even valuable tools or equipment that is purpose designed for secure attachment to a vehicle tray” he said.
For those restraining dogs with a lead or chain, RSPCA Australia advises people to ensure the restraint is long enough to allow the dog to stand and lie down, but not so long that it could jump or fall over the edge of the moving vehicle.
It also advises the use of swivels to attach the restraint to both the vehicle and the dog’s collar to prevent the chain from tangling.
