AUSTRALIA'S top science and technology research body has appointed a new chief executive, Dr Larry Marshall, who carries a wealth of business experience in his lab coat.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) said it considered 70 candidates before selecting Dr Marshall.
He comes from his current post of managing director at the Silicon Valley firm Southern Cross Venture Partners – a venture capitalist specialising in creating Australian technology companies and developing them internationally.
CSIRO chairman Simon McKeon said the new chief executive would develop commercial opportunities for research and technology developments.
“Dr Marshall combines commercial and scientific credentials with extensive global experience, making him the world class leader we were seeking for CSIRO,” Mr McKeon said.
“His wealth of experience in developing and applying science and technology makes him an excellent fit.”
Dr Marshall has 25 years of experience as an international technology entrepreneur, holds 20 patents protecting commercial products and has founded six successful technology-based companies in the United States.
Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane welcomed the "significant commercial experience" Dr Marshall brings to the CSIRO.
"Commercialisation of products and ideas will be valuable in ensuring CSIRO rightfully claims its place at the centre of Australian industry policy, building new links between business and research organisations.”
Dr Marshall will take the reins from outgoing chief executive Dr Megan Clark in January next year.
“Dr Clark leaves CSIRO with a legacy to be proud of, most notably for her long-term commitment to the global competitiveness of Australian science,” Mr McKeon said.
